Cannabis Advertising Rules Explained
Cannabis advertising is one of the most restricted areas in the industry. Since federal prohibition still technically classifies cannabis as a Schedule I substance, major advertising platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and most traditional media outlets ban cannabis ads outright. That leaves state-regulated channels — and every state has its own rules about where, how, and to whom cannabis businesses can advertise.
The most common restriction is an audience composition threshold. California requires that at least 71.6% of the audience be 21 or older. Other states set similar thresholds. Billboard restrictions are widespread — many states ban cannabis ads near schools, playgrounds, and daycare centers (typically within 500-1,000 feet). Digital advertising must include age-gating. And most states require that every ad include a specific disclaimer or the business license number. The table above compares these restrictions state by state.
